Falling off the wagon

My name is Julie and it has been 10 days since my last run.

I have a good excuse though as I have an undiagnosed dodgy right knee which is still giving me grief. However, in all honesty I haven’t done anything yet to identify the source of the problem, like go to my GP or a sports physio. But in my defence I have had a lot going on at the moment. I was going to say on my plate, but more of that in a bit.

I never feel great when I miss out on my runs, physically I feel lazy and lethargic, mentally I feel clogged up and stressed, and spiritually I feel like my channels are blocked. So I know I have to address this and quickly.

I could have done some exercise this week. I could have walked more. I could have gone swimming. I could have done some upper body resistance with weights. But NO I have done nothing. And because I have done nothing…I have nothing to talk about on my blog, and feel like a bit of a fraud to my online followers.

The big question is, when am I going to go for my next run? And the answer is I’m going to go out tonight when my other half gets in. It will be late. It will be dark. It will be raining still probably. But I will run, because if I don’t get back on the wagon then I fear I may never run again.

I am also back on my healthy eating as of today. I have had a week of indulgence. I met a friend for drinks on Wednesday, went for a curry with my running club on Thursday, had a bottle (yes a whole bottle) of red wine on Friday, and on Sunday we celebrated our daughters christening so have been indulging in the left overs from our family gathering, cake, wine, curry goat, fried fish, christening cake (not in that order of course)

This morning I went along to my weekly weightwatchers meeting knowing I had put on weight. I was tempted not to go, and to try and pull it back this week in an attempt to avoid the increase at the scales, however I know that without my weekly meeting to refocus me I would be likely to struggle. So I went and got weighed, finding out that in fact I had only put on 1lb which is not too bad considering the extent of my inactivity and indulgence combined.

So I am back on track. I have a plan to address my injury and to undertake alternative physical activity this week. I am committing to eating better (I even have a pot of vegetable soup on the stove as we speak), and I have blogged.

Balance has been restored and I am well and truly back on my weightloss and fitness wagon once more.

My name is also Julie and it’s been 10 days since my last run too! I took a week off for recovery after doing a marathon, a 10K and the Great South Run in the space of a month, but now recovery is done and laziness has set in… it’s so hard to get started again, even after such a short time off! I’ll also be going out this evening to kickstart things – good luck! 🙂

Bloody hell…now I have to go for a run…I can’t be outdone by another Julie 🙂 I did 3 half marathons in 6 weeks and I think my body needed a rest, but it has had its rest now…so no more excuses!!!

Heh, we all fall off the wagon at times. The important thing is to get back on it. Love reading your blogs:)

Hey Julie you are being hard on yourself !
What about the huge amount of people who
do nothing EVERYDAY you gave yourself and your
body a well earned rest ! I did a half marathon and
took 10 days off . It’s the inactivity that reminds
us all that we are active people and our body & mind
need a chance to regroup so you’re back and don’t
forget that same body is going to need a rest & recharge
again soon . You like us all are only human and
Let’s face it it’s not every week you christen your baby
Hope it was special & a lot of fun
Enjoy your run I may just hop on my treadmill after your inspiration
    Thank you

You are right of course Brigid. I am so glad I get this nagging feeling though, because a few years ago I could go months without doing anything…so it’s a good sign that exercise has become an integral part of my life

I’ve been doing nothing and eating too much too and I don’t even have a bad knee. My problem is getting made redundant again. A kind of torpor has come over me. I need to join you in your wagon I think 🙂

  7. You’ll get back on the running train soon Julie, I have faith. We are all hard on ourselves sometimes but knowing that you are keeping tabs on yourself, you will get back into your rhythm!

I feel your pain Julie and know where you are coming from. I have only been running for a year and a half. I completed my first HM this March and was determined to race another (Run to the Beat) this year. Two days before, I had a twinge in my knee after running for a bus. By the day of the race I was in agony. I was even having trouble walking let alone running. So disappointed not to have been able to compete in that race. It took a month to calm down and then another month to get motivated again. I’ve just started including running in part of my commute home. Tonight was raining, cold, dark and felt like ages getting home, but I loved being back out there. You will soon get your buzz back again. I look forward to following you. Good luck xx
