Perfect Parkrun

My times have not come through yet but I know I did a PB today simply because I was trying a new course.

What I didn’t expect to do though was go sub 34 – Something I haven’t done since early 2012.

My home run is Wanstead Flats, but it is ridiculously muddy at the moment which makes me really nervous about falling over and simply just knackers me out. I also do Mile End on occasion and Valentines Park sometimes with my pushchair, but today I made my way to Hackney Marshes parkrun…and boy am I glad I did.

It was a lovely bright, but cold morning and there were at least 100 other parkrunners there, including a good show from the East London Runners (My running club).

We set off quick, along a reasonably narrow path, club runners, January joggers, one man and his dog, a few men with pushchairs, and a handful of children including a speedy little Asian girl (circa 9 years old) in a beautiful pink sari and trainers.

I settled into my pace reasonably well once the club runners had overtaken and there was some space, then before I knew it I saw the fast runners heading my way, it wasn’t long before I had reached the half way point. This parkrun is an out and back route, where as all of the ones I have done to date are laps (mainly 2), so this was quite refreshing. I forgot to look at my Garmin to see how I was doing for time, it said 17.26 by the time I had remembered so I knew I was doing ok.

On the way back I focussed on not slowing down, forcing myself to keep up with the lady just ahead of me.

The sun was bright in the sky, making me think I should have brought sun glasses. I was just thinking about how other than having to squint I actually had perfect kit on today (ie nothing was getting on my nerves or misbehaving) and then low and behold my shoelace come undone. This has never happened to me. So slightly annoyed I stopped to do it up before setting off again. Whilst bending down I was overtaken by 2 guys running hand in hand with a little boy (one of their sons I assume), encouraging him to keep going and also a guy carrying his high vis windbreaker.

I knew it couldn’t be too much further so I gave it one final push…and there it was. The finish line. With a crowd full of people clapping the runners in, which was lovely. So I gave it one final blast and finished in style.

I stopped my Garmin at 33.22, but I think I was a little faster than that even. This is massive for me.

My fastest ever parkrun was back in March 2012 when I was training for the London Marathon, 32 minutes flat.

Since having my daughter a year ago (on Wednesday) I have been trying to get back to that level of fitness.

Today’s time means, I’m not far off.

  4. Oh, well done! And in January too πŸ™‚

Hackney Marshes is my home parkrun. It was an incredible turnout – more than twice as many as we usually get – and such a great atmosphere.

  5. Congratulations. Great time and you even stopped to fix your lace

Well done on a good time. Commando was tail end Charlie again today, running at the back. He said the lady who was last kept apologising for going so slow (she was jog walking) but, as he told her, “you’re going a lot faster than all those people at home on the couch.” Doing it at all is an achievement.
