What does June have that May doesn’t?

No its not a joke…its Juneathon of course.

What do you mean you don’t know what Juneathon is? Where have you been?

Ok. Lets start at the beginning.

I got involved in Juneathon this time last year fitting in perfectly to my goal of getting fit and losing some of my baby weight now that Rose was 6 months old.

So what is it?

Well its basically an online challenge where you exercise daily, logging your miles or laps or whatever, and then you blog (or tweet) about it.

Sounds like a terrible amount of effort!

And it is. But it is also a great laugh as although you are encouraged to do something proper in terms of exercise each day, I did seriously log a single plank last year on a day when I was feeling particularly lazy.

But throughout June of last year I did the following

juneathon_participant_logo50.3 kilometers of running
55,000 steps of walking
2,250 meters of swimming
An hour of outdoor gyming
A 40 minute spin class
30 minutes of Pilates
5 hours of housework
Some stair runs
Some kettlebells
…and a plank!!!

I lost 4lbs in weight…not the biggest weightloss considering the amount of exercise I’ve done, however I also lost

7 whole inches from my waist, 1.5 from my chest, 1 from my hips, 1 from each thigh and get this 0.25 from my neck…I never even knew you could lose weight from your neck!!

I also managed to improve my 5k time, from 38.29 to 37.23 – so over a minute off my then park run time.

This year I am really going to go for it, and not particularly to lose weight or inches, although both of those things would be nice…but basically I am taking part in Juneathon this year because in just over 10 weeks time I am taking part in TOUGH MUDDER!!!

Yep that’s right the obstacles billed as the toughest obstacle course on the planet. So at 2 stone overweight, with absolutely no upper body strength, limited dynamic fitness and a fear of heights and enclosed spaces I am about to embark on 4 weeks of hardcore training to get me ship shape for this event.

So what do I have planned?

  • I am going to attempt Insanity
  • I am going to run 2 half marathons (one in under 2 and half hours hopefully)
  • I am going to attempt to bring my park run time to under 30 minutes
  • I am going to do 2 sessions of kettle bells per week
  • I am going to swim once a week

Oh and did I mention I am launching my new business during June too??

So I guess I am asking you…YES YOU if

A. You are signing up to Juneathon

B. If you think you can last the whole month

C. If you would help keep me motivated along the way

You still have a couple of days to sign up to Juneathon, and we will be keeping an eye on each other on our Facebook page too.

Let a month of aches and pains commence

Who’s in??

Ive just been watching the Brighton Marathon footage from this year and stumbled on a feature about you. I’ve actually already signed up for tough mudder, my first half marathon in September and next years Brighton marathon- I’m not considered overweight but you have really inspired me and helped me feel like this is doable! I wish you all the best in your juneathon 🙂 keep up the amazing work!!

I’m in! I failed Juneathon miserably last year after a twisted ankle (I think, memory may fail me, but it was definitely foot related), and Janathon was much improved, so I am going all out for Juneathon! Good luck!
